April 28th, 2010

Anyone wanting to get a training contract is well advised to get some legal work experience along the way. By getting some legal work experience they can see the difference between practising a particular area of law and studying it.

Many students will find that they enjoy more than one subject when studying, for example commercial law and criminal law. But when they start looking into which firms to apply to they will find that firms will tend to practise one of these areas or the other.

Therefore, they decide to make applications to both groups of firm. They may, however, be taking a risk if they do not also have some practical experience of the different areas of law.

When they have success in gaining a training contract the risk is they will find out that they do not like practising the particular type of law in the same way they enjoyed studying it.

This illustrates how important it is for law students to undertake some real world legal work experience with a range of law firms.

The individual in the previous example would have been much better undertaking short law placements with a large commercial firm and a smaller high street firm specialising in criminal law. By doing so they would have been able to make a much more informed decision about where to apply to for their training contract and therefore reduce the risk of making a mistake.

Legal work placements can be done at various places from law firms to voluntary organisations.

It is important to look into the various work experience possibilities not only in the area you live to study but also where you might be living during the university or law school holidays if different.

After doing the research you then need to form a written plan about who you are going to approach for work experience and when. Not only will this ensure you get practical experience in the areas of law you are interested in, it will also give you a broad experience to help with your decisions making later on.

An extra clarification is essential here also: forensics lessons aren’t compulsory but elective. Whichever be the situation, forensic courses are new stuff and not exactly progressive with regards to social impact.

Advice on Landing a Law Training Contract in a Recession

April 14th, 2010

Unfortunately, for those wanting to secure a legal training contract and go on to become a solicitor it can be very much a lottery based on the state the economy is in at the time of graduation. Obviously it is much better to graduate in a time of boom than it is a time of bust.

However, all is not lost should someone be graduating in a recession as solicitors are always in demand and law firms will always be offering graduates training contracts.

It can even be seen as a positive thing to be looking to become a trainee solicitor in a recession. Should an applicant get a law training contract then they may well have a more rosy future than those who get one in the boom times.

If less trainees are employed during a recession then it follows that there will be fewer newly qualified solicitors in a couple of years. Newly qualified solicitors down the line will therefore have more opportunities to pick their job as the demand from firms for newly qualified solicitors will be proportionally higher compared to the number available. The likelihood is that this would lead to better salaries and career opportunities for them.

Therefore the important thing is to work out how to improve the chances of succeeding in getting a law training contract and getting ahead of the competition in a recession.

The most important thing to do to facilitate this is to do some thorough planning of your applications and your career in general. If you attempt to tackle everything at once, however, it will most likely seem like too much to do. The main thing to master is knowing what to focus on and at what stage.

The initial things to be focusing on are the research and planning of which universities to apply to, what areas of law you want to study and which courses suit you best. You will then want to move onto making a plan about that sort of work experience to undertake, what non-academic activities to get involved in and the types of firms you might want to apply to for their summer vacation schemes and ultimately for a training contract.

Once at university, getting work experience and applying for jobs should be seen as another module in your course. Something that you do consistently throughout the year and which you build your knowledge and skills in constantly so as to put you ahead of the others.

We all know that dedication, planning, research and perseverance can help you succeed in your exams and get better marks than others. A similar approach can also help you put yourself ahead of many others with your training contract applications.

Can I Become A Lawyer With A Criminal Record

March 22nd, 2010

The high salaries and big time careers of law attract many applicants. The process to become a solicitor or barrister is rather complicated and extremely competitive. You first need to get good enough grades at school to study a Law degree, a four year course, then a further year in a Legal Practice Course (LPC) before finally obtaining and undertaking two years in a ‘training contract’ at a legal organisation which is no guarantee. The nature of legal education and recruitment is elitist and before you waste any time you should consider if you are definitely good enough.

Those looking for the best legal jobs need to have the best a-levels in order to get into the best universities, they then need to outperform all of their fellow students and have an active extra-curricular timetable. Legal recruiters are looking for the cream of the crop and being ‘perfect’ will help your chances. So what do you do if you want to become a lawyer but you have a criminal record?

Your chances of getting any job can be harmed by a criminal record depending on the severity and you can be sure Law is no different. A criminal record can make it difficult enough to get into university, let alone get a job so what can you do?

The solution is honesty! If you are frank and honest about your entire criminal record from the start it will better your chances, if you can provide by providing evidence of personal development and possibly some decent character references might help too.

When in doubt, a university will do a background check and if you were lying all along, you will get you banned from all higher education applications. Employers are going to do a background check anyway so If you lie and when they discover you weren’t being honest, you’ll have no chance of getting a job.

As mentioned, it does depend on the severity of your offence(s) so don’t expect to become a lawyer if you did 25 years for murder. If you committed small offences/misdemeanours and served a small sentence you stand a much better chance, especially if it has been a long time since your offence. Many young offenders’ institutes actively encourage education and will help you pursue a career in Law if you wish. You may also find that ‘knowledge’ of the legal system can put you in a position to provide niche experience to a legal profession.

In any case you need to lay yourself out for judgement and be prepared to be judged very harshly, you may not like what you hear but the reality is that if you can’t get in with your history, maybe Law is not the profession for you.

Converting Your Degree To Law

March 20th, 2010

If you have a degree in any subject it is possible to convert that qualification to law by undertaking a one year Common Professional Examination (CPE) or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). Roughly 30% of trainee solicitors and barristers did not graduate with a degree in law. Some decided to take a GDL at the end of their degree and some may choose to change careers later in life.

People in England and Wales with a greater diversity of educational backgrounds can get into the legal profession by using the GDL/CPE qualification. The course takes one year full time or two year part time. A standard degree in Law takes four years which means that both law and non-law students can graduate at the same time. The GDL/CPE is also commonly referred to as the ‘law conversion course’.

Many UK higher education institutions offer Law Conversion courses but some of the largest are City University London, Kaplan Law School and the University of East London. Like any profession, employers will often prefer the best ranking institutions which could affect your career prospects. Tuition fees can vary from 2000 to 8000 for the one year course.

A typical full time conversion course lasts a minimum of 36 weeks which includes 4 weeks of assessments. The Central Application Board states that the estimated study hours for a CPE/GDL are 45 hours of lectures, tutorials, private study and research each week. This can often be a shock to the system for graduates of some arts courses whose timetable may have previously been considerably less active.

The CPE/GDL is an intensive one-year foundation course which, while not offering the full range of subjects of a law degree, provides the skills and methodologies to pick things up in the future. To gain entry to a CPE/GDL a minimum of a 2.2 degree certificate is usually required but graduates may want to consider the implications of lower grades in a competitive job market.

If you are aware that this is what they are meaning by this phrase then this is okay. Some card makers are reasonably simple to utilize and you will be able to print them for free after you have them designed and ready to go out of the printer.

I, myself can not design cards but with the free business card maker it is a great deal more easy for you to make cards since it has design elements and selections that you will be able to simply. Even a novice can simply use the software to make business cards.

My favorite option is not making and printing my own cards. Not only do I have it a great deal more easy since I can utilize the site to help me design the cards but I have help from the people on the website.
