Home Movie Theater: Screens

December 26th, 2009

When it comes to choosing a projection or TV screen, the first thing to think about is the kind of screen you want or even may need. If the room where you are setting up your home movie theater is large, then you will need to have a home theater projection screen or maybe you just want to go down that route anyway.

I, personally, like the idea of having a drop-down screen, but sometimes you have to have one even in a modest home theater. It converts your living room into a home theater: you recline in your chair; click a button and a screen drops down; click a button and the lights dim; click another one and the movie begins!

However, if you prefer a television screen, then you might be considering buying a new one. They say that a 27 inch screen is adequate, but I do not think it is. I really think you need 48-60 inches, but then I am a 50 something year old and my eyes are definitely not what they used to be.

If you are purchasing a new TV for your home movie theater, I think you should aim high. HDTV is upon us and since February 2009 the USA has been committed to High Definition. So, I would ensure that your new television is able to receive it. Then I suggest that your new home movie theater screen is a flat one in order to reduce the annoying glare that could ruin your experience, which could be another reason for opting for a projection screen.

Then you should ensure that the new television has enough input and output sockets for the equipment you plan to use and youre done. So, to summarize, I would go for:

More than a 27 inch screen

A flat screen

HDTV compliant

Sufficient input and output sockets

Satellite compatibility

I would definitely get a receiver which is already satellite enabled, because it is the future or even the near future. If you get a satellite TV connection you will have access to HDTV downloads which you can watch on your new home movie theater set-up whenever you like.

The Japanese Martial Art of Aikido

November 3rd, 2009

The sphere of Martial Arts is one of the most important contributions of Asia to the world. Who will forget Bruce Lee and the fact that he was first and foremost a martial arts competitor before becoming a movie star? Martial arts pictures are a huge hit with the ever-increasing popularity of Asian cinema like ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ and more recently ‘The House of the Flying Daggers’.

The Chinese are the first nation that come to mind when it you think of such things, but the Japanese are just as sporty with a rich heritage of body contact sports in their past. Modern Japan still gives honor to the martial arts by holding tournaments and promoting their martial arts abroad,

Aikido is one of these. It is interesting to note the fact that the word comes from three Japanese characters from which one derives the meaning of the one word. Ai means ‘joining’, Ki means ’spirit’ and Do means ‘way’. From this we can understand why Aikido lies beyond merely the physical skills of it students, particularly since its first proponent, Ueshiba, focused on the spiritual and philosophical development of his students.

In Aikido, one is not taught violence instead, one is trained to be in concord with the opponent so that you are able to defeat him more easily. This might appear odd but it really works. In attacking an opponent, the goal of the Aikido practitioner is to be one with the opponent so as to be able to tackle him where he is weakest and in so doing, divert or immobilize him, but never to kill him.

This is where Aikido becomes an art form. Art is something beautiful to look at and something positive and Aikido is all that. At least one of the people involved in the combat is searching for harmony and concord can only be achieved if there is elegance in the actions. The moves may be calculated, but there is an air of elegance in performing these movements. Not a feminine grace, but a grace that emanates peace. The ‘art of peace’ is what they call it in Aikido and it is one of the most affirmative influences of Aikido on its students and to everyone else who chooses to learn about this Japanese martial art.

Some of the techniques in Aikido embrace the following.

Ikkyo is the first technique. Using this technique, you direct an adversary by using one hand to hold his elbow and one to hold near the wrist. This action is supposed to allow you to pin your opponent down to the ground.

Nikyo, the second technique, is when you perform a wrist lock which enables you to turn the arm of your opponent which will in turn cause nerve pressure.

Sankyo, the third technique, is a technique that creates upward-spiraling tension throughout the arm, elbow and shoulder. There are many other techniques but the first three are enough to give you a basic idea.

When studying Aikido, it is important to bear in mind that, together with building physical strength, you will need to develop your mind to be able to overpower your opponent. Just like in any art form, it takes a great deal of practice and discipline to perfect the art of Aikido. The key thing to remember is, that anyone who wants to get into the art, must have the willpower to give honor to the art by performing it in the best way possible.

Home Movie Theater Projectors

October 21st, 2009

Going to the movies is a very popular recreation especially for those young professionals living a considerably stressful life running corporate affairs. However, for those who cannot afford to waste time traveling to and from movie theaters, the answer to this recreational dilemma might be just inside their own house.

You could recreate the audio-visual systems of the movie theaters with your very own custom home theater system. The best custom home theater installation certainly can consist of high quality components that are capable of rendering the complete movie theater experience without having to travel from your residence to the movie theater wasting time and effort queuing in heavy traffic. This modern technology can give you the relaxation and experience that full-sized movie theaters furnish.

The basic components: a wide screen and loudspeakers with clear and flicker free images from a high quality DVD, can easily create quite an authentic movie-going experience. Home theater professionals recommend that before you choose the final set-up and equipment for your custom home theater system, the dimensions of the room must be the first thing to think about.

So, if you have a small size room intended for your home theater system, a television may be best situated in the middle of one wall and three loudspeakers, placed on the left, right and center, might be enough to provide the surround sound you require from a custom movie theater. However, if you have a larger room, a home theater projector might be the best bet for recreating the “big screen”.

Home theater projector screens can provide an authentic movie theater experience. If you have a very large room for your home theater system, in combination with your home theater projector and home theater projector screen, you could add more speakers around the room. A further useful recommendation is that a subwoofer may also help to provide the optimum surround sound that will enable you to recreate the true sound of a movie theater in your own living room.

There are various designs and models of home theater projector you can choose from. You will need to understand the features of each one, before you decide on which one to buy. It may also be necessary for you to enlist the services of a home theater designer in order to get the home theater package that will give you the best entertainment. This will mean not needing to spend an unreasonable amount of time and money on your home theater system and home theater projector.

It is quite easy to purchase equipment with an over- capacity for your home theater, especially if you do not know what the options are and the various requirements that your home theater may have due to the room’s measurements. The size of your home theater projector screen should be a function of the measurements of your room and the kit in your custom home theater. For example, from where you intend to sit to the screen should be between two and five times the diagonal diameter of the screen. So, looking at it from another perspective, if you are going to sit 10 feet (120 inches) from the screen, then the screen should be 24-60 inches, but it is very subjective and depends on the viewers eyes.

Your home theater expert might also propose options for your home theater that may not include a television set. Why? The reason for this is the technological innovations employed by computers and home theater projectors. Home theater projectors like InFocus screenplay models, for example, can be hooked up with a computer in a small room set-up. Home theater projectors are also lightweight and can be transported effortlessly. Therefore, a projector is very useful for employment in custom home theaters and business presentations.

Home theater projectors and home theater projector screens do help provide an authentic cinema-like experience. This type of installation is particularly handy for business presentations and therefore it is becoming ever more popular. The combination of your custom home and custom office theater systems is a new innovation, which only a couple of smart customers have dreamt up.

It may well be that being now aware of all these facts: that is, that a basic television set, three speakers and a DVD player can be perfectly adequate for those people who only want a basic home theater system, you may decide that you do not really require a home theater projector, especially if the room for your custom home theater system is not very large.

You can enjoy a cinematic experience right there in your own home by considering your options carefully. You can then experience the relaxation a movie theater can provide without having to put up with boring traffic jams on the way back and fore to the movie theater.

Creating a Custom Home Theater

October 21st, 2009

Watching movies is a great escape from the stressful lifestyle we all live nowadays. Watching movies on a wide screen with surround sound can transport you far away from that stress into the movie you are watching. You experience the plot it as if you were actually there in the movie itself.

Until recently, we could only experience this sort of escapism in a cinema. However, modern technology is able to recreate the same visual and sound experience right in your own living room. We will discuss the starter components of a home theater system in this article. Read on to discover how these basic components can deliver the best cinematic experience possible in a custom home theater system.

Home theater experts state that the most important consideration in setting up a custom home theater system is the size of the room where you will set up the home theater system. The most important component of your custom home theater system, which is the television, is dependent on the size of the room, although the recommendation is that a 27 inch television set is the minimum necessary for your home theater set up.

It is also a recommendation that a flat screen television is advisable for a home theater system because it shows fewer reflexions and produces a crisper image. Another major component of a custom home theater system which depends on the size of the room, is the speaker system.

The number of speakers for your custom home theater system is dependent on the size of the room. You need at least three speakers to create surround sound, but you may place up to six speakers, if you want a more lifelike sound. Adding a subwoofer may also be a good way to achieve a complete surround sound like in the movie theaters. Three speakers is the minimum, although you may need up to six if the room is big.

Another major piece of equipment for your custom home theater system is the DVD player. It is a recommendation that DVD players with a progressive scan are the best choice. This is because progressive scan produces sharp and flicker-free pictures. However, this goes back to the choice of television unit, you will need to check if the flat-screen television supports progressive scan signals. You may also want to acquire a five-disk carousel DVD player. This will negate you having to get up from your seat to change discs every so often.

A minor cause for thought is the output of the DVD player since that will decide how loud your speakers can be turned up. Of course, almost all this depends on the size of the location in which the home theater system is going to be installed. Small rooms need only a few pieces of equipment, bigger rooms probably require more and the addition of specialist home theater furniture to your custom home theater system will make a huge difference. So, a larger room calls for greater investment. A smaller room does require less, but nevertheless good quality equipment to avoid a feeling of ‘cheapness’ and under-performance in your home theater system.

Finally, you may consider hiring a home theater expert in order to create a beautifully designed home theater system. If you can afford it, this is the best, because the home theater expert will be able to effectively design and set up your home theater system.

Your custom home theater designer may also recommend installing some additional features like specialized home theater seating and even other home theater furniture, such as small tables in order to make your home theater package complete and thereby make it more closely resemble a real movie theater. Having the finest and highest-quality custom home theater system will give you a most sought after set up, one that you can be proud of and that will enable you to enjoy your movies to the max.

The French Open Championship

October 16th, 2009

It is highly unlikely that you will not know of the French Open tennis championship, because it is a competition which is an annual topic of conversation. In French the name of the competition is ‘Les Internationaux de France de Roland Garros’ or ‘Tournoi de Roland Garros’. This tournament, which lasts for about a fortnight is held in Paris at the Roland Garros Stadium, from which it took its name.

The French Open is one of the most advertised and broadcast sports events in the whole world of sport and many VIP’s go to it. The attendees of the game are fanatics who await with baited breath every stroke, especially when there is a close battle between the two players, doing their best to win. TV viewers actually get a feeling of being there live too.

The French Open tennis championship is the second on the annual round of the Grand Slam tournaments and its history stretches back to the year of 1891 when it was elevated to an international competition. In those days, it was named the ‘International Championship of Tennis of France’ or ‘Championat de France International de Tennis’ in French.

First of all, only players that were registered or licensed in France were permitted to join in this competition, but things took a different turn in 1925, when the French open tennis tournament finally was accessible to foreign players. Until 1912, the ground the players used was made of crushed red brick dust. Actually the crushed brick was formed into a sort of red clay that was spread over the ground, which, until then, would have been a grass lawn.

The popularity of the French Open tennis tournament held at Roland Garros dates back to a competition between the Philadelphia Four (Rene Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet and Jacques Brugnon) who won the Davis Cup in 1927. It triggered the desire in the French to defend their cup in future competitions. This new tournament designed to bring back home the cup was held on a stadium named after the World War I pilot Roland Garros and since then the name has stuck.

The term ‘open’ became has been used since 1968, when the tournament allowed both amateurs and professionals alike who wanted to test their skills at tennis. Since then the French Open tennis tournament has also brought some novelties in terms of prizes.

Beside the regular winners’ prizes, they also award a ‘Prix Orange’ for the most correct and press friendly player, a ‘Prix Citron’ for the player with the strongest personality and a ‘Prix Burgeon’ for the one that turns out to be the revelation of the tennis year.

Home Movie Theater Lighting

October 12th, 2009

Light fittings are things that not that many people think about all that often. However, the lighting in a room can make us feel a experience mood or enhance the atmosphere we want to create in that room. There are many types of light fixtures, fittings, bulbs, shades and stands to suit all areas of the home. That means both indoors and even outdoors where you might want to emphasize some special landscape feature.

Are you planning to remodelredecorate a room? In this case, I know it concerns a home movie theater room, because my friend, Owen Jones, asked me to give some advice. I definitely think that you should consider light fixtures as one element to change. For instance, you could start by abandoning the central, overhead incandescent bulb or tube light for sure.

My suggestion would be to install four or even six small wall-lights; these are not expensive and come in hundreds of colours and sizes to suit any pocket. The only drawback with wall lighting for your home theater, is that the wires would really have to be chased into the wall so as not to appear unsightly.

But, you could get around this by buying standard lamps. These are also available in thousands of designs, but they come with two disadvantages: trailing wires and a higher cost. They are easily moveable though. Small, table lamps is a similar alternative, but you may need more electrical sockets.

Once you have decided exactly on what style you want, have a dimmer attached to each either in unison or separately, as you like. You should probably keep one reasonably powerful light at the DVD end of the room just in case the equipment needs seeing to, but it too could be on a dimmer.

The effect can be really incredible. And all from just changing the existing light fixtures and fittings. You could even go the whole hog and have an exit sign over the door or a few speciality lamps higher up out of line of sight, so that they are not distracting, say, an old 1970s style lunar lamp and a fibre-optic lamp, for amusement or as a talking point while waiting for the film or snacks to be got ready.

So, whatever type of home theater lighting you are looking for, contemporary or old style traditional, you will find many options to choose from. From different colors to different sizes and styles, there are many. You can find them online or in home improvement stores. I have made a link to one of my online favourites below.

Furthermore, when you do implement the changes, you will see that your home theater has taken on an ambiance all of its own and it will “definitely” enhance your home movie theater experience. In fact, it may be these subtle changes, room by room, that make you see your home in a very different light.
